How Master Key System Setup Works for Commercial Properties
A tiered master key system divides your building into access zones arranged in levels. At the top sits the Grand Master Key, carried by ownership or senior management, which operates every lock in the building. Below that, Master Keys are issued to department heads or floor supervisors, each unlocking only the zone relevant to their role. Change Keys sit at the base of the pyramid — individual keys issued to staff members that open only their assigned office, stockroom, or suite. This structure means a warehouse associate in a logistics facility near Lyell Avenue cannot inadvertently access executive offices or a medication storage room, reducing both internal theft risk and liability exposure.
The real engineering challenge is in the cylinder pinning. Every lock in the system must be pinned so that it responds to its own Change Key, its designated Master Key, and the Grand Master Key — but rejects all other keys in the system. Our technicians handle this work with precision using professional-grade cylinder equipment. We work primarily with mortise lock hardware for commercial applications because the mortise lock format allows for interchangeable cores, making future re-keying or access-level changes fast and non-destructive. If your current door hardware includes older door knob locks that are not keyed to a master system, we can evaluate whether re-keying or upgrading to mortise lock cylinders is the right call for your specific doors.
